James S. Laick

Senior Executive of Sales and Marketing, ISDA Fraternal Association

James S. Laick, LUTCF, FICF, ISDA’s new Senior Executive of Sales and Marketing for ISDA Fraternal Association in Pittsburgh, has nearly two decades of executive sales experience in the insurance industry. At ISDA, he is tasked with assisting in the continued growth of the company, bringing it into the digital age and making ISDA highly competitive in the marketplace. His job is to re-engineer the entire product-sales experience, developing new products and building a sales force, finding ever-wider sources for distributing ISDA’s life and annuity products, and assisting in the implementation of software with digital forms, fillable forms and everything else needed for reps to do business with the most effective and easy-to-use platforms.

For the previous 15 years, James worked with GBU Financial Life out of Pittsburgh. When he began with the company in 2002 as a Regional Sales Manager, GBU had only 50 reps and $190 million in assets. He was soon promoted to National Sales Manager, and by the time he left the company, he had helped it grow to more than $2.5 billion in assets with over 1,500 active reps throughout the country. In total, over the course of 15 years, James had actively recruited more than 3,800 reps.

As GBU National Sales Manager, James was in charge of sales and marketing. Working with upper management and the Board of Directors and reporting directly to the VP and CEO, he was responsible for recruiting and training, as well as introducing all GBU products and services to the licensed insurance and annuity reps, which included attorneys, CPAs, securities reps, FMOs (Field Marketing Organizations) and IMOs (Insurance Marketing Organizations). The company’s basic portfolio was life insurance and fixed annuities, and James was involved in the development of sales and marketing materials, filings for insurance, applications and forms and software development, helping the programmer develop the programs needed for illustration of the product offerings. James also wrote articles for each issue of the company magazine, which came out six times per year for the 15 years he was there. He also put on an average of five seminars each year and was frequently asked to speak to outside organizations.

James has a BS degree from Geneva College, Beaver Falls, PA, and he currently holds active licensing in all facets of life and annuity insurance, including property and casualty. In addition, he was previously licensed in securities, which has given him great familiarity with the inner workings of the security side as well. James also holds professional designations of Life Underwriters Training Council Fellow (LUTCF) and Federal Insurance Council Fellow (FICF).

He is a people person who loves communicating with his reps and “telling it like it is” to ensure they have all information they need in order for every one of their clients to receive the best possible service.
