Millions of Italians are returning to work, and restaurants and cafes will begin reopening on May 18; however, some lockdown restrictions remain in place that make international travel to the country all but impossible, and officials have not yet indicated when tourism will resume, The Local reports.
Also, during a not-so-encouraging briefing earlier this month, Italy’s tourism secretary, Lorenza Bonaccorsi, said 2020 might as well be “written off.”
Despite the sour forecast, claims that Italy’s borders will be closed to foreign visitors until 2021 are false—it’s still a fluid situation and the country is working to welcome tourists back as soon as it’s safe to do so.
